Pure Substance and Mixtures

Is Black Marker Really Black?

Experiment Question:

  • What is the difference between a mixture and a pure substance?

Definitions:

  • Pure Substance: A substance in which there is only ONE type of particle
  • Mixture: A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.

Materials:

  • 400 ml plastic beaker
  • Paper towel
  • Water
  • 6 Black Markers

Procedure:

  1. Fill the plastic 400 ml beaker with water 1 cm high

  2. With the Bic marker, write the number 1 on the left side of the paper towel. Make sure the number is 2 cm above the bottom of the paper towel

  3. Repeat this for the remaining markers, Marks-A-Lot - 2, Crayola - 3, Sharpie - 4, Expo - 5, and Vis A Vis - 6.

  4. This is what it should look like:
  5. Slide the paper towel into the 400 ml beaker so the bottom of the paper towel touches the water. Make sure the water does not Directly touch the numbers when you first place the paper towel in the water!!

  6. Leave the paper towel in the water.  You should notice that the paper towel will soak the water and go up the paper towel.  The longer you leave the paper towel in the water, Record your observations.

        Results/Data Table:

Pure Substance/ Mixture

Observation

1 - Bic

pure substance

The ink did not run because it was only made out of black dye.

2 - Marks -A- Lot

pure substance

It did not run because it was only made out of black dye.

3 - Crayola

mixture

The ink did run. I was made out of blue and purple.

4 - Sharpie

pure substance

The ink did not run. It stayed the same as when we put it into the water.

5 - Expo

pure substance

The ink did not run. It kept the same shape as when we put it in.

6 - Vis A Vis

mixture

The ink did run. It was made out of blue, purple and orange.

Data Analysis;

1. Looking at your observations, how did you tell if the marker was a mixture or a pure substance?
We could tell if it was a mixture because if it gave off different colors after we put it into the water; then it meant that there were more than one color used to make the black marker. If it was a pure substance then only black dye was used to make the marker. We figured it out if it was a pure substance when it did not run.

Material

Description

Pure Substance or Mixture?

Charcoal

Does not separate into different substances when melted

pure substance

Salt Water

Separates into salt and water when it is boiled

mixture

Air

Separates into different gases (nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen)

mixture

Aluminum

When heated aluminum does not separate into different substances

pure substance

Paper

When cut, separates into smaller pieces of paper

 pure substance

Brass

Separates into different metals

mixture

Other Notes: (use pages 82-91 in your textbook)

1. Find three examples of a pure substance and get an image for each one.

Pure Substance Image of Pure Substance
Example 1: iron
Example 2: gold
Example 3: lead

2. Find three examples of a mixture and get an image for each one.

Mixture Image of Mixture
Example 1: pizza

Example 2: fruit salad
Example 3: cereal

3. What are the two types of Pure Substances? and Define both types of Pure Substances.

Two types of pure substances are elements and compounds. Elements are natural and when two or more of them are put together they become compunds.

4. Elements are divided into 3 categories.  Name the three.

The 3 categories are metals, non-metals, metalloids.

5. Complete the chart below

Can it be broken down into smaller, simpler substances? Can it be broken down by a Physical Change? Can it be broken down by a Chemical Change?
Elements

No it can not be broken down into simpler substances  by physical or chemical means.    No it can not be broken down into a physical change. No it can not be broken down into a chemical change.
Compounds
Yes it can be broken down into simpler substances.    No it cannot be broken down into a physical change. Yes they can be broken down into chemical change.

Summary:

Morgan's Summary
Kathryn's Summary
A pure substance is something that is not mixed with anything else, and a mixture is two substances combined that haven't gone through a chemical change. In today's experiment, We used different black markers on a paper towel to write a number. Then we put the paper towel into water. After awhile; we saw which markers were pure substances and mixtures. The difference between a pure substance and a mixture is that a pure substance is made up of only one type of particle. However, a mixture is when something is made up of more than one substance.

  Tyeshia's Summary
  Nayeli's Summary
Today we did an experiment on Pure substances and mixtures. We used black markers and drew lines on a towel. we put the paper towel in water and observed. If there was more than one color it was a mixture. If it was a substance it stayed its true color, which was black. Pure substances is when there is no other chemical mixed with it. Mixture is when there is a mixture of something. Today we did an experiment on pure substances and mixtures. We had black markers and a paper towel. We had to mark 1,2,3,4,5,6 on the bottom  of it and then we had to put it in water and see if it smeared and if it did it was a mixture but if it stayed the same it was a pure substance.
